Digital Materials Science: New Properties for a New Reality
Around the 70s and 80s atomistic modelling was qualitative. At best, it told the experimenter the mechanism of what was going on at the level of atoms and molecules, and at worst, it did not suggest anything. Next came quantum mechanical methods, and quantum mechanics could give a predictive number that could then be tested. The problem with quantum mechanical methods is that they are very resource intensive. It takes tens, hundreds of hours to calculate a single structure, sometimes even more

I will get to what we are doing from a different topic. I was born, raised, and educated in Novosibirsk Academgorodok, which was created at the same time as computer technology. There Mikhail Alexeyevich Lavrentiev laid the foundation for a large school, which then began to appear in every other university. Then there were academic and commercial codes. Then there were platforms that integrated these codes so that when you are designing materials, you do not have to think about how to choose a mesh for the finite element method, what convergence parameters to use, and so on
