Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Northwestern Federal District
Alexander Gutsan and Governor of the Murmansk Region Andrey Chibis kicked off
the ceremony marking the 90th Celebration of the North and the 65th Celebration
of the North for Students. The ceremony was held as part of the sports
programme of the 6th ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ International Arctic Forum. The Forum has been organized
by the Roscongress Foundation with the support of the Government of the Russian
Federation.
“This
remarkable sporting event, which enjoys a rich history and unique traditions,
has become a trademark of the Murmansk Region. The Celebration of the North symbolizes
resilience, healthy living, and a strength of spirit that does not waver in the
face of the harsh condition of the North. I am sure the celebration will reward
participants with a wealth of memorable experiences, new acquaintances, and a
festive atmosphere of sport and culture. I wish everyone plenty of energy,
health, good cheer, luck, and, of course, success and victory!” Presidential
Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Northwestern Federal District Alexander Gutsan
said.
The ceremony was held at Central Trade Union Stadium in Murmansk. The
show united the past, present, and future of the region with a focus on the
rich sporting traditions of the Kola Peninsula.
“We have
come together to celebrate a special milestone with the opening of the 90th
Celebration of the North and 65th Celebration of the North for Students. More
than a simple sporting event, it is the spirit of the North that unites
generations and inspires us to achieve. Every new year brings with it new
events, and this year we hosted Russia’s first winter swimming championships,
as the Polar Olympics live on, attracting new heroes, new champions, and inspiring
new generations. The Murmansk Region is on the up and up, and the important
decisions made at the International Arctic Forum affect the future of the
Arctic and the entire country. This celebration is for all of you. Enjoy the
events, support the athletes, and draw inspiration from their strength and
courage. May you enjoy this day to the full,” Governor of the Murmansk Region Andrey
Chibis said.
Those attending the ceremony had the chance to learn more about phygital
sports and were treated to a performance by freestyle riders and a flag show. The
event wrapped up with the lighting of the Celebration of the North flame.
As in previous years, the Polar Olympics will bring together all of the
participants for a special closing ceremony on 12 April.
The Forum sports programme kicked off on the first day with an Arctic
workout in ties attended by Minister of Sport of the Murmansk Region Svetlana
Naumova. International Arctic Forum participants also had a chance to learn more
about Ice Floating and Arctic teambuilding, take part in snowball fights, and
go skiing and snowboarding.
The 6th ‘Arctic: Territory of Dialogue’ International Arctic
Forum is being held in Murmansk on 26–27 March to the theme ‘To Live in the
North’ and is a key platform for discussing current issues concerning the
socioeconomic development of the Arctic territories and formulating effective
