Marya Lagarkova

Marya Lagarkova

General Director, Lopukhin Federal Research and Clinical Center of Physical-Chemical Medicine of the FMBA of Russia
Biography
Maria Lagarkova, born on 26 November 1966, graduated from the Biology Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University. She is an expert in the field of stem cell biology, epigenetics, molecular biology, author of more than 200 scientific papers and 8 patents (h-index = 25). Ms. Lagarkova’s research results have been published in journals such as Nature Biotechnology, Immunity, PNAS, and others.

Main scientific accomplishments of Maria Lagarkova include:

An extensive collection of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from patients with hereditary diseases was obtained by methods of genetic reprogramming. Banks of human pluripotent stem cell lines (iPSCs and ESCs) were created. Epigenetic differences in human ESC lines were shown for the first time.

A biotechnological platform for directed differentiation of pluripotent cells into specialized cell types was developed.

Cellular models of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease, Huntington's chorea, spinocerebellar ataxias were created on the basis of iPSCs, which allowed obtaining new information on the molecular mechanisms of these diseases.

The theoretical and experimental basis for the future application of pluripotent stem cells for regenerative medicine and drug screening has been established.

Intercellular interactions in the development of malignant tumors (intercellular communications in the formation of resistance to chemotherapy and tumor-stroma interactions) and the creation of therapeutic vaccines against malignant tumors are also areas of interest.

Other notable achievements include:

Ms. Lagarkova is Head of the Department of Immunology, School of Biology, Lomonosov Moscow State University; Chief freelance specialist in regenerative medicine of FMBA of Russia; Editor-in-Chief of the ‘Genes and Cells’ journal; expert of scientific foundations such as RFBR and RNF. Member of dissertation councils D 208.135.03, MSU.03.12

Recently, the government adopted amendments to the law allowing such drugs [cancer vaccines – ed.] to be used in the institutions that develop them. I very much hope that such facilities will be built across the country, and some have already been constructed. <…> It is necessary for such drugs to be conceived and produced not only in one institution but in many places across our country

Biomedical Technologies: The Foundation of Technological Sovereignty
When we create a biotechnological product that is as complex as a space rocket, we gain a lot of serious scientific knowledge. <…> It is necessary for medicines to be conceived and produced not in one institution but in many places across our country, in leading institutions. It is crucial for there to be several of us. The scalability of scientific thought is very important
