Sofya Unruh, Candidate of Culturology, Associate Professor of the Department of Ethnocultural Studies at the Institute of the Peoples of the North of the Herzen Russian State Pedagogical University, Deputy Director for Regional Public Affairs and International Cooperation. Sofya Unruh participates in the development of curriculum for the basic bachelor’s degree programmes specializing in Primary Education (Nomadic School Teacher), Native Language and Literature, Cultural Education, and master’s programme Ethnophilology and Ethnocultural Studies in Northern Education, offered at Herzen University.
Areas of expertise are traditional knowledge and beliefs, problems of social adaptation, development of education of indigenous peoples of the North. She organized a number of expeditions to study shamanism, non-ritual folklore, and the current state of the Evenki culture. The results of field studies are used in lecturing and preparing publications on the development of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation.
Sofya Unruh leads the development of youth projects that have won the Student Research Competition on shaping a tolerant environment in St. Petersburg and Student of the Year Contest. 2015–2018 – Chairwoman of the St. Petersburg branch of the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East.
