Mikhail Shchelkanov was born 25.01.1969 in Sverdlovsk. During 1987-1989 he did military service in the Soviet Army. In 1995 he graduated from Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and arrived in a postgraduate study of the Russian Academy of Medical Science, after which received academic degree of Ph.D. in physics and mathematics (1998) and Ph.D. in biology (1999). Since the fourth year of the Institute M. Shchelkanov began to work in Ivanovsky Institute of Virology (Moscow) having passed in it the way from the laboratory research assistant to the head of the laboratory. In 2006 he received an academic status of the associate professor in "Virology". In 2010 he received academic degree of Doctor of Sciences in Biology.
In 2014 M. Shchelkanov moved to Vladivostok to a position of professor of Department of Microbiology and Virology in the Pacific State Medical Institute. In 2015, having won international contest "on the attraction of world-class research and educational personnel in the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU)", he held a position of the head of Laboratory of Microorganism Ecology in the School of Biomedicine of FEFU. In 2018 on the basis of this Laboratory the International Scientific and Educational Center of Molecular Technologies was created and successfully functions. He heads Laboratory of Virology in the FSC of Biodiversity (FE Branch of RAS) and is official expert of the "Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology in Primorsky krai".
