Michael Calvey is the founder and Co-Senior Partner of Baring Vostok Capital Partners, the largest private equity firm focused on Russia and the CIS. Founded in 1994, Baring Vostoks funds currently own over 40 businesses with combined turnover of approximately $8.3 billion and operations primarily in internet, software, healthcare, retail, banking, and natural resources. Baring Vostoks funds are supported by more than 40 institutional investors, primarily pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, university endowments, and fund-of-funds from Europe, Asia, North America and the Middle East.
Baring Vostok is presently investing its fifth fund with total capital of $1.4 billion. Baring Vostok is or has been a major shareholder in Burren Energy, CTC Media, Yandex, Avito, European Medical Center, Ozon, Kaspi, Tinkoff Bank, Gett, Syktyvkar Forestry, Vimpelcom, IVI, and other leading CIS companies. Mr Calvey is the Chairman of the Investment Committee for all of Baring Vostoks funds and is also a member of the Investment Committees of affiliated funds in Asia (Baring Asia) and Brazil (GP Investimentos).
Before joining Baring Vostok, Michael lived in London and New York, where he worked mainly on oil and gas investment projects for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Salomon Brothers.
At EBRD he was responsible for investments in the energy sector in Central and Eastern Europe. At Salomon Brothers Michael worked on M&A and capital markets transactions in the US oil and gas industry.
