International Cooperation to Develop a Low-Carbon Hydrogen Sector: Alliances and Partnerships
The example of St. Petersburg [where the first hydrogen-powered tram appeared in 2019, – Ed.] is a good example of how hydrogen energy in transport can compete with batteries or electric transport. In St. Petersburg, it is not so easy to install another charging station and get it connected to the grid in the city centre. There are a lot of bridges there, so the mileage of transport must be significantly higher from charge to charge. In this sense, hydrogen is more competitive than traditional batteries

International Cooperation to Develop a Low-Carbon Hydrogen Sector: Alliances and Partnerships
We used to talk about promising applications for hydrogen, such as oil refining and fertilizers. Now the new areas are transport, energy, and metallurgy. <...> Transport and energy are becoming promising, and these are domestic market topics. We have isolated zones where electricity is expensive by default; we have northern delivery. Let’s avoid any illusions that hydrogen will compete with diesel tomorrow. No, diesel and petrol will still be the cheapest fuel. But where we want to replace diesel with electricity, we need to look for niches

International Cooperation to Develop a Low-Carbon Hydrogen Sector: Alliances and Partnerships
Against the backdrop of the geopolitical crisis, an energy crisis has taken shape. All commodity prices – gas, oil – have skyrocketed, and now [these resources, – Ed.] are insanely expensive. Why is it important? The most popular technologies for producing hydrogen are one from gas, the other from water by electrolysis. What happened? Gas prices have risen sharply, making hydrogen from gas very expensive. At the same time, the cost of producing electricity from RES [renewable energy sources, – Ed.] keeps going down. A unique event took place: whereas previously the hydrogen energy was about the climate, but there was no money, now there are incentives to develop the hydrogen energy based on the green hydrogen. <...> Green hydrogen begins to compete with blue hydrogen, which has never happened before, i.e. there are economic incentives for investment

Petrochemicals in Russia: Overcoming the Obstacles
Consolidating the efforts of the industry and the government to form a unified register of industry orders is now more urgent than ever. No one but the government, represented by the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Industry, supported by the Ministry of Finance, will probably be able to split this responsibility within the industry and select the leader in the priority portfolio of projects that exist today, and select the leader company that will develop these projects in conjunction with a research institute

Emerging Challenges for the Chemical Industry: The Climate Agenda
Unless the state and industry work together in a coordinated manner, we will definitely be unable to achieve any real results. However, it is likely that the initiatives and incentives which we have already put in place will soon enable us to boast of low-carbon non-commodity exports. We remain hopeful that at some point in time, we will be able to begin exporting low-carbon technology

Emerging Challenges for the Chemical Industry: The Climate Agenda
Let’s not forget that the chemical industry, like any other being presented and discussed at Russian Energy Week, is facing a great many challenges. One such challenge is undoubtedly the climate agenda, and petrochemical companies are having to dedicate more time and resources to sustainable development projects. This in turn is creating certain stimuli and certain challenges for the industry. At the same time, the chemical industry and chemical products possess certain unique functional characteristics, and play a key role in fulfilling a number of objectives, including in terms of environmental protection through reducing the consumption of resources and reducing carbon footprints. All of this would be impossible without the chemical industry

A System of Mutual Recognition for the Certification and Exchange of Carbon Credits in Russia
Hydrogen is a segment where we still have chances to make an early start, and instead of playing catch-up, work to become leaders in the field. [Companies – ed.] have come together and joined forces to develop an integrated strategic document for the country. It is called the Comprehensive Programme for the Development of Low-Carbon Hydrogen Power, and we are playing a key coordinating role in it. And the objective of this document, aside from everything else, is to set out specific goals and determine the technological resources which we could lead the way in, or at least localize right now, so as to not import foreign technology

The Fuel Revolution in the Transport Sector: A Focus on the Environment
The transport industry is one of the main emitters of greenhouse gases. Indeed, it accounts for 15% of the 51 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted [globally – ed.]. This is spurring society to find environmentally acceptable solutions with regard to their mobility. The main revolution which is taking place before our eyes is the emergence of forms of transport which are not even new to us, but which do run on new forms of fuel, and new engines
