Tourism is for the Young: Modernizing the Tourism Industry and Discovering New Horizons
4 September 2021
The tourism industry is going through a new development stage, and youth as the most ambitious and progressive stratum of society should become its driver

Why do young people go to tourism now? Everyone is involved in tourism <...> Over the past two years, when the pandemic began, a national project in tourism was launched, as well as programmes to support the tourism industry, cashback programmes, subsidy programmes for various tour operators <...> Now is the time to engage in tourism, first and foremost for the youth — Andrey Ignatiyev, President, Russian Tourism Union.

Digitalization is actively developing the tourism. We are digitizing everything: services, guides, mobile applications, information on promoting our products, we even digitize the search for tourists with a quadcopter. This is the young people who will do that — Andrey Ignatiyev, President, Russian Tourism Union.

Many people who are 40+ come from the Soviet Union. There was no marketing, no advertising, nothing. We do not possess the instruments that our youth now has — Vladimir Rusanov, Minister of Tourism of Kamchatka Territory.

Russia has great potential for the tourism development, but it is not always possible to present it to the market as a product due to the lack of skills

We have an enormous potential <...> but we do not know how to present it. We need to learn to demonstrate our competitive advantages — Vladimir Rusanov, Minister of Tourism of Kamchatka Territory.

Tourism industry is understaffed

We understand the direction we need to move; we need personnel, we need youth, because no matter how many investments in the region we make, how many hotels we build, how much tourist infrastructure we develop, somebody still needs to work — Vladimir Rusanov, Minister of Tourism of Kamchatka Territory.

It will probably be quite difficult without any education, although now in Russia there are not so many higher educational institutions or colleges that provide a professional level of training — Vadim Mamontov, General Director, RussiaDiscovery.

Involve young people in tourism development

Now the only hope is young people, because they possess the design code, storytelling skills, which is very important. Of course, it is crucial to add an emotional and a marketing component to everything that you see in Kamchatka, to create a special atmosphere — Vladimir Rusanov, Minister of Tourism of Kamchatka Territory.

When we attract people to the company, it is important for us that we do not put professionalism in the first place, the real filter is person's passion, energy, desire to travel, love for the outdoor activities <...> without it we do not even look at professional qualities — Vadim Mamontov, General Director, RussiaDiscovery.

Working with universities to train staff

Many young people work in tourism, but we need to attract more… <…> We work with a lot of universities that train people for the tourism industry — Andrey Ignatiyev, President, Russian Tourism Union.
