The Arctic: Territory of Scientific Cooperation
29 March 2017
13:30

Joint scientific research is a vital aspect of international cooperation in the Arctic. Indeed, this has been the case since the first International Polar Year in 1882, and the concept has steadily developed since then. The International Polar Year of 2007–2008 initiated by Russia was an unprecedented success. Its results made it possible to understand and assess the scale of the changes occurring in the Arctic environment. Among the items on the agenda is the need to further integrate the efforts of the international scientific community. These include efforts to develop practical recommendations to adapt different types of activity in the Arctic to climate change in the macroregion. Issues for discussion: • Global change in the Arctic — main trends and challenges • International scientific cooperation programmes in the Arctic • Observations and observation platforms in the high-latitude Arctic region — development prospects
