Young people who congregated at the XIX World Festival of Youth and Students are able to compensate for things that adult politicians are not able to agree upon. This thought was expressed on October 16th by Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia, who took part in the “Global policy and its agenda: how to protect the world” panel discussion within the frames of the WFYS 2017.
“The Festival assembled thousands of young people from whole over the world. And it is a great opportunity to know each other better, to arrange further communications in order to maintain trust and mutual understanding between the countries and peoples. If you’d like, it is a good opportunity to make up for things that could not be done on an adult politician level”, he said.
The leader of Russian MFA also recommended to the guests of the Festival to consider visiting sights of Sochi. He pointed out that the city “has become an international center: for sports, discussions, tourism, culture and education”.
Those participants of the Festival who attended the panel discussion had a unique opportunity to talk to Sergey Lavrov and ask him not only about the Festival itself, but also about the international politic situation in the world, which, as it appeared, seriously worry the youth.
The head of Russian MFA, in particular answered the question about referendum situation in Catalonia. In Sergey Lavrov’s opinion, the only way of solving this problem is the dialogue, and the solution must be found within the frameworks of the constitution of Spain.
“We consider this as an internal affair of Spain. We hear the calls to come to the dialogue, hear announcements about readiness to the dialogue, including those from Barcelona. This is the only way of considering the situation that formed as a result of the referendum”, Minister answered.
A question about the role of Russia in the international relations was also asked. Sergey Lavrov answered that in 10 years it would be significant. In Minister’s opinion, our country will become one of the poles of the multipolar world and will unite a lot of allies around itself.
“We hope that in 10 years period the tendency to multipolarity will be much more evident. It is an objective tendency, when on different continents new mighty powers appear: economical, financial… And those who now tries to stop this and maintain one side domination, I hope, would become a little wiser by that time and would not go against the flow of the history” Sergey Lavrov emphasized.
The Minister also answered the question about relations between Russia and European Union countries, which are experiencing a certain crisis in recent years. In Sergey Lavrov’s point of view, Europe in relation to Russia should be guided by its own interests and not by clues from across the ocean.
“I am convinced that objectivity will prevail and Europe will realize at last that they must act independently, and not at a prompt from overseas. Especially since these hints are directly contradicting each other. Europe should be guided primarily by its national interests”, Minister concluded.
“How some initiative organization can take part in the values formation, in the humanistic approach to life on an international level?” the representative of “Life and Business” Creativity Development Fund asked the Minister.
“Education culture allows young people to meet more frequently, better learn the culture, history, origin of traditions. This is the main thing that needs to be done in today’s world in order to overcome the situation, when politicians make decisions to the detriment of their people,” Sergey Lavrov answered and added: “The Festival and such kind of events as well as cultural and educational exchange should be used so as to let the new generation of politicians learn to hear each other, take into account the approaches of the partner when making decisions. Thanks to a cultural educational exchange you could understand people from within, people with whom you are going to interact.”
“What kind of assistance does the MFA give to the initiators of such projects in Russia?” the representative of “Life and Business” Fund clarified.
“Only moral and political. We have no money”, Sergei Lavrov said with a smile and caused the applause of the hall.
