Art Team Contest Receives over 300 Projects for Development of Russian Creative Industry

The organizers of the first Art Team National Contest of Creative Industry Projects received 345 projects from 63 Russian regions as of the 10 May application deadline.

The Art Team contest aims to establish a creative talent pool in the country and develop a creative economy through systematic work in the regions of the Russian Federation.

Creative young people between the ages of 20 and 35 were invited to take part in the contest. The finalists will consist of the authors of the top 80 projects, who will be selected by an expert panel and announced after 31 May. The contest’s panel of judges is comprised of creative industry experts based on the categories of the contest as well as representatives of the government and business.

The most popular categories among the Art Team participants were: ‘Creative Location’, which is dedicated to building creative spaces (88 projects), ‘Event Management’, in which the projects consist of ideas for organizing and holding cultural events (81 projects), as well as ‘Education and Art’, which focuses on educational projects (74 projects). The bulk of applications were received from Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Tomsk and Saratov Regions, the Republic of Tatarstan, and the Republic of Crimea.

Representatives of the panel of judges said the authors of the projects devote special attention to modern tools for getting young people involved in the educational process, such as gamification or virtual reality technologies.

Examples of entries:

  • financial awareness courses with gaming elements for teens
  • educational programmes for designers and artists on the use of virtual reality
  • a project on the history of the space industry in Russia in the format of a virtual reality app
  • an eco-tour of the Galichya Nora Nature Reserve in the Lipetsk Region
  • the use of campsites and hotel complexes to film movies, television shows, series, and other digital art products given the restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic
  • a project for the staging and demonstration of children’s performances in city trams in the city of Tomsk

The authors of the best works will take part in a two-day educational intensive workshop in Moscow and will also have the opportunity to present their projects to potential investors at the Russian Creativity Week festival and at the Building Trust platform of the Innosocium Foundation. The authors of the top 20 projects selected by the panel of judges will take part in a competition for a grant from the Taurida Youth Forum.

«The study we conducted as part of the Art Team project, which involved more than 7,000 respondents from all regions of Russia, showed that one of the main barriers to the development of creative industries in Russia today is the lack of expertise that young creators need to implement their projects and transform their ideas into a business project. Representatives of the creative community and creative industry managers who took part in the survey pointed out the desire and need for targeted training on such expertise and developing the skills that are essential to success. We are confident that the Art Team project, in which the next stage will be an educational programme, will provide participants with the tools needed to develop the creative industries sector in their regions», Russian Culture Centre Director Marina Abramova said.

«We have been successfully working with young people for a long time as part of various projects of the Innosocium Foundation, and we know how many talented people there are in our country. In creating the Art Team contest, we wanted to help them believe in themselves and give them the tools and knowledge that is essential to implementing their ideas into a successful business project. That is why I believe the second, educational part of the contest is just as important as determining the winners. People who have achieved great results in the creative industry will share their vast experience with young creators and talk about how to properly build management processes and how to attract financing for the project. It is particularly gratifying that projects from different regions of Russia are competing in the contest, and its results will help form a common, yet diverse creative space throughout the country», said Yelena Marinina, Deputy CEO of the Roscongress Foundation and Director of the Innosocium Foundation.

The Art Team project aims to seek out promising socially significant projects in creative industries and create conditions for the professional fulfilment of creative young people through training in managerial skills and providing them with tools to launch creative projects with economic potential on the market. In addition to the contest, the Art Team project involves an educational intensive workshop, which will be available online on the project’sofficial website in June.

More information about the contest, including the full list of nominations, is available on the official Art Team website.

The Art Team project is being organized by the Russian Culture Centre and the Innosocium Foundation, the social platform of theRoscongress Foundation together with the Centre for Film Festivals and International Programmes, with the support of the Presidential Grants Fund.
