The main aims of the Ecology national project are to make a dramatic change in the way humans affect the environment, to switch to a sustainable natural resources management model, and to improve living standards for 20 million of Russian citizens who currently live in adverse environmental conditions. Following the path to a clean country, the government is planning to introduce a comprehensive system of managing municipal solid waste and to eliminate illegal dumps all over the country and «the most dangerous objects of accumulated environmental harm». The country must create an effective system for monitoring and controlling the quality of air. To improve the quality of drinking water, it is planned to modernize water supply systems and build new wastewater treatment facilities employing advanced technologies. A wide range of rivers and lakes, including the Volga and Lake Baikal, are to undergo ecological restoration and rehabilitation. Apart from this, 24 new specially protected natural areas will be created in Russia by 2024.
