Eurasian Women’s Forum 2015

24-25 September 2015
St. Petersburg, Russia
It was Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, who came up with the idea of establishing in Russia a high-profile international platform for discussing the new role and opportunities of women amid the challenges of the 21st century, which would consolidate female leaders and women’s associations in the interests of peace and humanitarian cooperation.

The First Eurasian Women’s Forum was organized by the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation and the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The First Eurasian Women’s Forum was held on 24–25 September 2015 in St. Petersburg under the slogan ‘Towards peace, harmony and social well-being’. It reflected the positive trend towards consolidation of the female community in the name of peace, equity, harmony and social well-being. The Forum was met with such interest that it was «Eurasian» only in name: the event was attended by representatives of all five continents: over 1,000 female leaders from 80 countries, including members of parliament from several nations, representatives of the executive authorities, among them deputy prime ministers and ministers, members of the business community, academia and NGOs and prominent figures of the international feminist movement.

At the plenary sessions and four discussion platforms (‘Women and Power: World’s Agenda of Sustainable Development’, ‘Women in Evolving Economy: New Opportunities and Challenges’, ‘Women in Shaping the Global Strategy of People’s Health’ and ‘Women in Developing Humanitarian Cooperation and Charity’), the Forum participants discussed the problems of sustainable development, the need to ensure environmental, food and informational security, the refugee situation, expansion of women’s role in politics, economics and business.

The Forum’s programme also embraced presentations of humanitarian and charity projects, exhibitions and workshops.

The Forum results were stated in the Outcome Resolution reflecting the participants’ main ideas and proposals.

The Outcome Resolution of the First Eurasian Women’s Forum, based on the ideas of humanizing international relations, appealed to the leaders of governments, political and public figures, academia and cultural echelons, the media and NGOs.

The document stressed the importance of strengthening the role of women in reaching the global sustainable development goals and implementing the new Post-2015 Development Agenda of the United Nations. The resolution was sent to the leaders of 166 nations and to 24 international organizations.

The first Eurasian Women’s Forum gave a powerful impetus to holding regular women’s meetings in Russia and abroad for discussing urgent socioeconomic and humanitarian issues.

To coordinate this work, the Working Group of the Eurasian Women’s Forum was set up in Russia, headed by Galina Karelova, Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council. The new body has helped establish women’s councils at a number of ministries, while also stimulating the development and implementation of twelve international projects devoted to enhancing the opportunities and role of women in politics, economics, global health strategy, environmental security, science, hi-tech sphere, including the digital economy and promotion of charity and humanitarian projects.
